Denise Giltzow
The rasp of metal against wood composed the soundscape of my childhood. Against the backdrop of my grandmother’s fabric scissors sliding across her sewing table, and enveloped by the smell of linseed oil in Grandfather Dee Dee’s carpentry shop, I learned firsthand about the powerful connections that can arise through creative expression. I couldn’t be without making—the call to create is in my blood, and I’ve answered that call by experimenting with numerous mediums and art forms throughout my life. I’ve explored ceramics, watercolor, and papermaking, among other mediums but the lathe had captured my imagination for decades. The overwhelming joy and the deep sense of connection to my grandfather that I experienced when I turned my first pen was impossible to ignore, and I have been honing my craft ever since. I am grateful to Eric at Blue Ox for inviting me into the lathe room to learn this craft.
