Uncle Sam's Tour Guide to Southeast Asia (Trade Paperback Edition)

$24.95

A newly revised version of Eric’s book of poems about his time in the Vietnam War

Well I’d like to tell you boys a tale
‘Bout a logger gone to war
An 18-year-old country kid
As green as the forest floor

Uncle Sam’s Tour Guide to Southeast Asia These ballad style poems by Eric Hollenbeck tell his story of an 18 year old logger that is drafted and sent to Vietnam in 1968. From boot camp to returning home, the poems put the reader in Eric’s shoes as he “goes to war” and navigates the jungle as a radioman in the 2nd Platoon with the “A” Company of the 327th 101st Airborne. Twenty-four years later, in 1992, Eric transformed his experiences into this series of 16 poems. In Eric’s unpretentious style, the poems, often humorous and invariably personal, help the readers understand something of what it was like to be a combat soldier during that war.

The cover photo, courtesy of Art Greenspon, shows Eric’s platoon. Eric is behind the man with his hands outstretched.

Uncle Sam’s Tour Guide to Southeast Asia is also the foundation of Radioman – a play written by James McManus in 2018 and performed for two successful seasons in 2019.
